If you haven’t heard, Japanese researchers filmed a live giant squid in its natural habitat for the first time, and on Sunday, January 26, 2013, we’ll finally be able to see it. This is truly exciting. For decades, I had been hoping to see footage like this, and now, I will! I have my problems with the Discovery Channel and their obsession with reality TV–just like, practically, every other network–but this is one of those rare instances, where the Discovery Channel has a show worth watching! I hope you watch it, too!
Oh, and after decades of failed attempts to film this giant, elusive predator, you might be wondering how these researchers managed to pull through. Well, they used lights that imitated distressed bioluminescent jellyfish, which quickly drew the hungry (and aggressive) predators to the submersible…and the camera.
